Building Efficiency Basics: Selecting Appliances
Residential and commercial buildings in the U.S. consume 20 quadrillion British Thermal Units of energy each year, representing 40% of the nation’s total energy consumption. A growing percentage of this consumption comes from plug loads: appliances and consumer electronics. Using efficient appliances and eliminating phantom loads, offer cost effective means to save money and reduce one’s carbon footprint.
The Colorado Renewable Energy Society (CRES) will present Building Efficiency Basics: Selecting Appliances Tuesday, April 19th from 6:30 to 8 PM This free, virtual event will discuss techniques for choosing efficient appliances and electronics, and the potential savings involved. Registration is require: GoToWebinar link This lecture is presented by Derek Law, board member of the Southeast CRES chapter. Derek and his family moved to Colorado Springs in July of 2020. He recently transferred to the Space Force after serving 18 years in the Air Force. While on assignment with the National Reconnaissance Office, he chaired the Sustainability Committee’s Energy Board and led efforts that reduced power consumption of a large data facility here in Colorado. Derek has a background is in electrical and systems engineering and was awarded outstanding thesis from the Naval Postgraduate School for an approach to optimize solar and wind energy systems in Afghanistan. His home is now solar powered, he drives a Chevy Volt, and he received a home energy audit and followed up by adding insulation to his house this past winter. He was a founding member of the 2021 Colorado Springs Solar United Neighbors Co-op, served on its vender selection committee, and is currently a board member of the Southeast CRES chapter.” |

Phoenix Haus builds customizable, prefabricated, panelized single-family homes at their manufacturing facility in Grand Junction, Colorado. The homes are then assembled at the building site into an extremely energy efficient and healthy home. The homes are built to Passive House standards and are all electric, allowing them to be net-zero energy with the addition of solar panels.
A question and answer session will follow Mr. McDonald's presentation.
About our speaker
Bill McDonald started his career working on energy analysis and retrofit of existing buildings. His experience with the state of existing buildings along with exposure to European building techniques include Passive House set him on a path to develop a better way to design and build homes. He founded Phoenix Haus to embody that process.

Colorado Springs Solar Co-op launch event
Tuesday, March 23rd, 6:00 PM
Live Zoom presentation with Q&A - register here
If you missed the March 23rd event, catch the repeat sessions at the same time on May 6th orJune 8th.
Recording of the March 23rd Event
Learn about solar energy and its benefits for your home, or small business. We'll take you through the technology, economics, financing, and more. You'll also learn about the solar co-op we launched. The co-op is free to join and members are *not* obligated to buy solar panels.
Co-op members get:
• a free review of your roof to see if solar panels will work for you
• one-on-one support for all your questions about going solar
• an individualized proposal for solar at a bulk rate
Find out more with no obligations and from the comfort of home. This will be a live presentation so bring your questions about solar and we'll answer them!
For more information or to join the Co-op, see the Colorado Springs Solar Co-op web site.
Who is Solar United Neighbors? SUN is a national non-profit bringing potential solar energy customers together and uses the power of bulk purchase to provide discounted installations.
Who is Eligible? This co-op is for any Colorado Springs Utilities customer.
How do I Sign Up? The zero-obligation sign up can be done on the website. A home or business owner can sign on as a co-op member at no cost, even if they decide to not pursue an installation.
How Does This Work? Sign-up will continue until July 1, 2021. If the co-op reaches at least 30 members, SUN will publish a request for proposals from solar installers, and award the contract to the vendor offering the best combination of price, service, and installation schedule.
How much can I Save? Savings vary from co-op to co-op in Colorado based on the contract award. Typically, SUN sees a 10% to 25% discount below average regional prices. This is in addition to the Colorado Springs Utilities solar rebate-- one of the last utility rebates in the state; and the 26% federal tax credit. Also, the larger the co-op, the greater the savings from bulk purchase discounts.
