The History and Current Status of Distributed Renewables
Tuesday, November 11 at 7:00 PM | In Person | BCRES
In November, our Boulder County chapter welcomes Dr. Peter Lilienthal for a look at the history of distributed power. Based on his 40+ year career looking at the economics of distributed power, Dr. Lilienthal will first discuss the evolution of distributed power’s technologies and markets. After discussing the current state of distributed power for energy access in developing countries and high-penetration renewable power systems in remote areas and islands, the bulk of the talk will focus on the potential for distributed power to strengthen the US grid by improving resilience and reducing the need for transmission expansion. Powering the Block: Neighborhood-Scale Electrification in Denver
Thursday, November 20 at 6:30 PM | Hybrid | MDCRES
The Metro Denver chapter of CRES welcomes graduate students from the University of Colorado Boulder's Masters of the Environment (MENV) program for a look at neighborhood-scale electrification in Denver. Denver has committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2040, but heating with natural gas remains one of the city’s most pressing climate and equity challenges. To address this, our speakers' Capstone project reimagines how neighborhoods can transition to clean heating through neighborhood-scale electrification, a strategy that retires branches of the natural gas distribution system block by block and replaces them with renewable, electric alternatives.
