U.S Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Volunteer Opportunities

Hello Metro Denver CRES Chapter. Looking for something fun, exciting, and rewarding to do this fall? Sign up to volunteer for the Solar Decathlon, a design build competition coming to Denver October 5-15, 2017.

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon competition challenges collegiate teams to design and build full-size energy-efficient, solar-powered houses. Free to visitors, it features a sustainability expo and many educational events.

You can guide tours of student-built sustainable houses, mentor middle school groups, or assist the site operations and event management crews.

Here is a brief list of roles that are available:

Greeters – welcome attendees and pass out programs, direct attendees to Docents for tours of the Solar village, and answer basic way-finding questions.

Visitor Liaisons – monitor the length of line wait times, count number of visitors, and answer basic village way-finding questions.

Docents – guide attendees on tours of the Solar Village which start every 15 minutes from both Welcome tents and last up to 20-30 minutes. This role requires pre-study of Decathlon houses, though we will provide talking points. This is a good opportunity for those in the industry and people passionate about solar or renewable energy.

Education Days Mentors – mentors are needed each day for Solar Decathlon Education Days, on Oct. 5, 6, 12, and 13.  Mentors are needed to greet middle-school field trip groups starting at 10:45 a.m. and stay with their assigned group until the buses return for the end of the school day, approximately 2:00 p.m.  There will be 3 rotating activities to guide the students through: about 1.5 hours in the Solar Decathlon village, 45 minutes in an educational workshop, and up to 45 minutes for lunch.  We ask Mentors to arrive at 9:30 am to check in and be oriented.

Additionally – There are a few volunteer opportunities for volunteer registration (to assist at the volunteer desk), and Site Operations Water Delivery and Retrieval
