"Biofuels Research” with Bryon Donohoe (NREL)
Thursday, October 22, in Golden, and Online via Live Webcast!

The next public meeting of the Colorado Renewable Energy Society will discuss the latest advances in Biofuels Research. Driven by the desire to limit imported oil and legislative mandates, research is being conducted to investigate the use of biomass to produce liquid transportation fuels. This research involves studies of plant science, chemistry, physics and engineering, and to be effective, technoeconomic analysis must be conducted to address important cost drivers. This presentation will discuss some of the important research efforts in biofuels production and how they are tied to technical targets to improve the economic viability of biofuels.

Bryon Donohoe applies his background in structural biology and plant cell biology to study the underpinnings of biomass recalcitrance. In particular, he has turned several years of studying the cellular mechanisms involved in plant cell wall assembly toward now understanding the biological disassembly of plant cell walls in biomass. Dr. Donohoe is a key user and mentor of the Biomass Surface Characterization Laboratory-a collection of imaging technologies including laser scanning confocal microscopy, environmental scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy-used to better understand structural changes during biomass conversion. In particular, he is expert at biomass sample preparation including cryopreservation, immuno-EM, and using electron tomography as a technique to study the complex 3-D structure of the cell wall at the molecular scale. Dr. Donohoe is also involved in efforts to understand microbial interactions with biomass and the structure of environmental microbial communities. He has a Ph.D. in Molecular/Cellular Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a M.A. in Biology from the University of Colorado at Denver, and a B.S. in Biological Science from Colorado State University.

This meeting will take place on Thursday, October 22, 7:00 PM, at the Jefferson Unitarian Church, 14350 West 32nd Avenue (about a mile west of I-70) in Golden.

THANK YOU to all who participated in the Denver Tour of Solar Homes and Green Jobs & Career Resources Fair

CRES thanks all of the homeowners, sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers, and other participants who made the 2009 Denver Tour of Solar Homes – and especially the Green Jobs and Career Resources Fair – such a success!
www.cres-energy.org/tour

Both the 2009 Tour and Job Fair drew unprecedented media attention. The Job Fair in particular received extended coverage on two Denver TV station’s evening newscasts:

CRES Policy Committee Updates & Action Alerts

The City and County of Denver’s code rewrite process for is entering its homestretch. The CRES Policy Committee invites its Denver-based members to step up to Denver's Planning Board & Council to demand "Passive Solar Access" for the first floor of homes and commercial buildings. Passive solar is free energy & daylighting, and is also deployable as interior heat. CRES members may also speak in favor of code provisions requiring neighbors' landscaping not to interfere with any rooftop solar PV or solar thermal, if they wish, during this opportunity for input.

The following are some talking points for this effort:

  • Denver is rewriting its zoning code, and this is where solar access will be preserved or lost;

  • Without solar access, opportunities to install solar, grow the solar sector,
    and combat global warming will be lost;

  • CRES's Denver residents and businesses are encouraged to testify in favor of preserving solar access where it has not already been lost.

Look for flyers with these and other talking points at our Thursday meeting.

Choose one of these two Denver's City Council / Planning Board joint hearings:

Wednesday, November 18, 5:00 - 8:30 PM
or
Thursday, November 19, 12:00 - 3:30 PM
at the Wellington Webb Municipal Building, Room 4G2/4F6
201 W. Colfax Ave. (just north of Civic Center Park).

Each speaker will be allowed three minutes; speaking informally or reading written comments are both fine. Whatever your reason - you want solar for your home or business, you're an installer growing green jobs, you want to actually do something about global warming - please make your case to these policy makers.

For additional information, please contact either Gerry Todd at 303-393-8027 or Don Tressler at 303-753-4003.

Other CRES News and Notes

It’s also time to provide your input for the 2010 session of the Colorado State Legislature. Are there any laws or regulations that get in the way of your renewable energy or energy efficiency business? Are there any new laws or regulations that would help you to provide clean energy and energy efficiency? If so, please contact either of the Policy Committee’s co-chairs:

or
