CRES CLIPS
Happy New Year from the Colorado Renewable Energy Society!
While the economy could be in (much!) better shape, CRES
nevertheless looks forward to a very exciting 2009. With a new
President and new ideas about energy coming to Washington, we look
forward to the rest of America joining Colorado in creating a New
Energy Economy!
ASES Report on "Green Collar Jobs Helping to Power Colorado's
Economy"
You probably already received our message from last week about the
exciting new report from CRES's parent organization, the American
Solar Energy Society. "Green Collar Jobs in the U.S. and Colorado"
shows how the growth in jobs for the Energy Efficiency and Renewable
Energy (EE/RE) industries have already helped create over 88,000
jobs in Colorado by the end of 2007. And that was before Vestas,
ConocoPhillips, GE, IBM, RES Americas, Siemens, and several other
major employers chose to open major EE/RE facilities in Colorado!
You can view the full report, and find out more about how YOU can
find a green collar job, on the ASES website.

CRES Monthly
Meeting on ASES Jobs Report
Thursday, January 22, 7:00 PM (NOTE NEW TIME!)
The first CRES monthly meeting of 2009 will discuss the ASES Green
Collar Jobs report. ASES Executive Director (and co-author of this
report) Brad Collins will discuss how green collar jobs are already
helping to power Colorado's economy. This trend in job growth will
continue if (and only if!) the right policies and leadership are in
place, so it provides valuable material for leaders in Washington,
Denver, and nationwide.
This meeting will take place on Thursday, January 22, at 7:00 PM
(please note the new time for our monthly meetings!), at the
Jefferson Unitarian Church, 14350 West 32nd Avenue (about a mile
west of I-70) in Golden.
Attendance is free for members of CRES, Environment Colorado, and
the Sierra Club; and only $5 for non-members.
Those who can't join us in person on Thursday night can also attend
this meeting online via Live Webcast.
Complete information about this meeting and webcast is available on
the Events page of the CRES website:
http://www.cres-energy.org/events/index.html#nextmtg
A recording of this webcast will also be available through the Event
Archives of the CRES website on Friday, January 23.

Share
your Memories of
Maurice Albertson with ASES
CRES mourns the passing of CSU Professor, Peace Corps Founder, and
NCRES Member Maurice Albertson on January 11. Over the six decades
that he taught at CSU he was instrumental in developing the
department of engineering and the water resources arena by building
the university's research, graduate and international programs. His
interest in his international students and their experience at CSU
led him to be a founder of the CSU International Center. In 1958 he
was appointed to be the director of CSURF (Colorado State University
Research Foundation) and in that position was a major force in
helping to bring research grant money to the university.
He had a lifelong desire to benefit the poor people of the world.
This began as he worked on water resource projects in many
countries. He founded the South East Asia Treaty Organization
Graduate School of Engineering (later the Asian Institute of
Technology) in Bangkok, Thailand, where many engineers from all over
southeast Asia have been educated. In 1961 he directed the
feasibility study for the Peace Corps for the U.S. Congress, and
worked with Pauline Birky, Andrew Rice and Sargeant Shriver to found
the Peace Corps and to train early Peace Corps groups at CSU. He has
been a leader in institution building in causes for peace,
humanitarian advancement, village development and water resource
management. He has been an inspiration to many people in these
endeavors.
Donations in his memory can be made to his Village Earth nonprofit
organization (
http://www.villageearth.org) or the Maurice Albertson
Scholarship Fund in the Department of Civil Engineering at CSU. A
celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. on February 14, at
the First United Methodist Church in Fort Collins. Friends may send
condolences to the family at
http://www.bohlenderfuneralchapel.com .
ASES is preparing a remembrance of Professor Albertson. If you would
like to share your own memories for this story, then please contact
Dona McClain. dmcclain@ases.org
