Solar and Energy Conservation”

Speaker: John Avenson
Description: Get more out of your Solar and
Green Home Tour by learning how to recognize solar concepts
and conservation basics. Energy “Input” and energy
“Efficiency” come in many forms!
Biography
John Avenson has worked for Alcatel-Lucent (Western
Electric, AT&T Bell Labs) for over 38 years and is currently
testing the next exciting generation of 4G Mobile phone
technology. He lives in an NREL Passive Solar heated home he
built in 1981 and continues to keep it updated and efficient
by keeping an eye on the latest NREL research. Over the
years after accumulated improvements, he measures his home
improvements with Blower door tests to achieve the best HERS
rating and E-Star ratings possible. He religiously charts
his monthly Public Service bills to measure his
improvements. John loves to share his 29 years of experience
gained from living in a passive/active solar home.

Speaker: Mike Amoroso,
Construction Manager, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver
Title: “Energy
Efficiency in Affordable Housing”
Description: Summary of
Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver’s energy efficient
building standards and how energy efficiency and green
building technology can be effectively and affordably used
in low-income home construction.
Bio: Mike Amoroso has
worked in the residential home building and remodeling
industry for 13 years. Mike began his career building custom
homes on the coast of Maine where he first learned about
construction methods for energy efficiency in cold, harsh
climates. Mike then moved to California and worked as a
General Contractor focusing on remodeling projects and
educating homeowners on the importance of tightly sealed,
well insulated structures to maintain comfortable living
temperatures year round, as well as the importance of proper
material use to maintain healthy indoor air quality. For the
past 4 ½ years Mike has worked for Habitat for Humanity of
Metro Denver (HFHMD) first as a Construction Supervisor and
now as Construction Manager, teaching and working with
primarily unskilled volunteers throughout the construction
of some of Colorado’s most energy efficient homes. Mike also
supervised the construction of HFHMD’s first LEED Platinum
duplex in 2009.
As a result of his volunteer work with
Habitat International, Mike has also established a
non-profit organization operating in Zambia, Africa that is
developing a sustainable agricultural business community and
is educating Zambian’s on the importance of conserving
natural resources.
Speaker: Steve Stevens
Title: "Converting a
Stick-Built 1970s Energy-Sucking Home to an Energy
Generator".
Description: This
presentation by Steve Stevens of Golden Oldy Cyclery &
Sustainability will show how he has converted his 1979 home
consuming 61,000 BTUs per sq ft/year to become a net
producer of 23,000 BTUs per sq ft/year.
Biography Living on 3
continents and traveling to 61 countries on 6 continents,
Steve Stevens has studied what native peoples have been able
to do with sunshine. Steve loves the Sun - for all it can
do! He loves Bicycles - for how efficiently they do what
they do. He has completed the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii 2
times and crossed the USA on bicycles 2 times.
Steve Stevens has a BA in Math/Physics
from Indiana University, and an MS in Applied Math from
Northwestern University, and a PHD coursework in Computer
Science at Northwestern University. He worked for 35 years
in R&D for AT&T Bell Telephone Laboratories. He has given
over 100 presentations to such groups as the International
Switching Symposium at MIT; Computer Designers Conference in
Anaheim, Ca.; IEEE Tencom in Seoul, Korea 1987; and to the
Sandia National Laboratories - Earth, Wind & Sun Festival -
2009.
