Xcel Energy To Close Two Coal Plants,
Expand Renewables
In mid-August, the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC)
approved a plan presented to it by Xcel Energy to shut down two
coal-fired power plants and expand renewable energy production,
beginning in 2010. The two plants are the Arapahoe Station in Denver
near Santa Fe and Evans and the Cameo Station in Grand Junction. The
two power plants have a combined rated capacity of 229 MW.
Xcel took this step as part of its plan to reduce its carbon
emissions in order to meet the goals of the Colorado Climate Action
Plan. The plan, published by the Governor Bill Ritter and the
Colorado Governor’s Energy Office in November 2007, calls for 20%
reduction of carbon emissions in 2020.

Also as part of the decision, the PUC approved an additional 200 MW
of renewable energy capacity. Read more about the Xcel action in an
article titled “Xcel Takes Unusual Step to Shut Down Coal Power
Plants” published in the August 20 edition of the Denver Business
Journal.
