Fort
Collins Certifies Elementary School Twice Green
The Poudre Valley School District in Fort Collins has certified the
new Bethke Elementary School with two green building certifications:
Green Globes and the U.S. Green Buildings Council Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The school is the first in
the country to earn the Three Green Globes certification from the
Green Building Initiative.

In addition, the building architects—RB&B
Architects, Inc.—are applying for LEED-gold certification. Four
years ago, the firm designed the Fossil Ridge High School for the
Poudre Valley School District, which obtained a LEED-silver
certification. Fossil Ridge received the 2005 CRES Renewable Energy
in Buildings Award as one of the outstanding buildings constructed
that year in Colorado.

Bethke Elementary has a number of energy
efficiency features, including natural daylighting, a highly
insulated and well sealed envelope, and a super efficient mechanical
system. The gymnasium is cooled through indirect evaporative
cooling.
