Denver Designated
Solar America City
Denver
boosted its national solar stature last week when the U.S.
Department of Energy (DOE) designated it a Solar America City. DOE
Secretary Samuel Bodman made the announcement on Friday at U.S.
Senator Ken Salazar’s third annual “New Frontiers in Energy” Summit
in downtown Denver.
Along with
the designation, DOE gave a grant of $200,000 to Denver to
accelerate the adoption of solar energy technologies. Denver is one
of 12 cities to receive the Solar America Initiative grants in 2008.
The purpose of this DOE-sponsored program is to help cities work out
challenges facing homeowners and businesses that want to include
solar energy on their buildings in urban areas. These challenges
include unnecessary code restrictions and similar rules that cities
have the power to change.
In his
speech, Bodman announced that Denver will be eligible for technical
assistance from DOE to build its solar energy program. He said his
goal is to establish solar energy as a mainstream resource option.
