Thin-Film Solar Manufacturing Plant Slated for
Northern Colorado
September 7, 2007
AVA Solar, Inc. in Fort Collins announced plans
this week to build a solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing plant in
northern Colorado. AVA Solar was founded earlier this year by
researchers at Colorado State University (CSU) as a spin-off of
their research at CSU.
The AVA manufacturing plant will use thin-films of
cadmium telluride (CdTe) to create PV modules. CdTe thin films
require less than 1% of the material that silicon PV modules require
to generate the same electricity. However, thin-film PV modules are
usually less efficient than modules made from crystalline silicon,
which is the standard for today's PV industry.
