Twin Buttes Wind Power Plant
Begins Spinning Near Lamar
September 25, 2007
Colorado generating capacity from wind energy
jumped up 25% last week. PPM Energy flipped the switch on the
state's newest wind power plant, called Twin Buttes, on September 14
at a ceremony near Lamar that was attended by Colorado Governor Bill
Ritter.
PPM Energy, which is one of the largest wind power
developers in the world, has a 20-year contract with Xcel Energy in
Denver to purchase output from the plant.
The Twin Buttes plant has 50 GE wind turbines with
a combined rated capacity of 75 megawatts (MW). The plant is located
nearby the Colorado Green Wind Power Plant in Bent County. Bent
County Commissioner Bill Long said the county expects the project to
generate millions of dollars of property tax revenue.
"This is one of the reasons we made a big push
around renewable energy, because we understand that it adds value to
the agricultural economy, especially in places like the Eastern
Plains," Ritter said at the inauguration ceremony. The governor said
that he grew up on a farm east of Aurora and understands how windy
it gets in Eastern Colorado.
For more information about the dedication, see an
article in the September 15 edition of the Pueblo Chieftain that was
written by Anthony Mestas and titled "Ritter Dedicates New Wind
Farm."
