Governor Ritter Breaks Ground for Large Wind Plant
Near Peetz
May 21, 2007
Colorado Governor Bill Ritter helped break ground
last Wednesday on a large new wind power plant near Peetz. The plant
will have a rated capacity of 400 MW and will be the second largest
wind plant in the United States when it is completed by the end of
the year.
The governor spoke to about 200 local citizens and
dignitaries at a ceremony held near the Nebraska border in Logan
County. He spoke about the potential of renewable energy to build
economic development in rural communities like Peetz. Ritter said,
“Along with our tremendous agricultural crops, Colorado is the 11th
windiest and 6th sunniest state in the nation. Our intellectual
resources [in renewable energy] are second-to-none.”
The Peetz wind plant, which is being constructed by
FPL Energy, will contain 267 wind turbines made by GE Energy. The
plant will connect to the Xcel Energy distribution grid via a
78-mile transmission line, which is the longest line that is
dedicated to a wind energy facility in the United States. To read
