Durango Purchases 100% of its Electricity from
La Plata Electric Green Power
May 7, 2007
The City of Durango announced on April 12 that it
will purchase 100% of its electricity from La Plata Electric
Association's Green Power Program. The purchase is equivalent to
more than 8 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually and will cost the
city about $120,000.
Under the Green Power Program, La Plata customers can
purchase blocks of 100 kWh for $1.25 a month. Among Tri-State’s 44
member cooperatives, La Plata Electric is the largest purchaser of
green power. Currently, La Plata Electric has more than 1,000 green
power customers who purchase about 800,000 kWh in total every month.

Durango City Manager Bob Ledger said, “We are excited
about the decision to go 100 percent green.” Ledger pointed out that
the decision has the support of the Durango City Council. It is part
of the City’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Durango
signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement in 2006.
In exchange for the purchase, La Plata Electric will
conduct an audit of city facilities to search out savings through
energy efficiency. For more information, see the City of Durango
