Tri-State to Acquire 50-MW of Renewable Energy

July 25, 2007

Tri-State Generation & Transmission Association, Inc. will seek proposals for about 50 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity from renewable energy resources later in the year. This will be the first major acquisition of new renewable energy resources for Tri-State and represents a turn-around from the company’s stance of several years ago toward renewable energy.

Tri-State Executive Vice President J.M. Shafer made the announcement Wednesday at company headquarters in Westminster. Shafer said the company is responding to requests from its member cooperatives in Colorado and New Mexico to add renewable resources to its system.

As part of the announcement, Tri-State is seeking proposals immediately for 250 MW of combined cycle natural gas generation in eastern Colorado. The natural gas and renewable energy installations will increase the company’s total generating capacity by 10%. Tri-State supplies electricity to 44 member rural electric cooperatives in Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Nebraska, and its service territory lies in the heart of U.S. wind energy resources on the Great Plains. The company is the second largest electric power producer in the state.

Last month, Tri-State Director Public Relations Manager Lee Boughey discussed the wind energy potential in areas served by Tri-State member rural electric associations at the 2007 Colorado Renewable Energy Conference in Steamboat Springs. He noted the company has begun transmission construction project that would bring both coal-fired and wind-generated electricity from eastern Colorado to cities on the Colorado Front Range.
