Boulder Scientists Play Key
Role in World Climate Study
January 25, 2007
According to interviews
published last weekend in the local press, Boulder scientists at
NCAR are playing a key role in developing the conclusions of an
important climate report that will be released next week in Paris.
It is the report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,
which will provide the strongest evidence to date that humans are
causing climate change through emissions of greenhouse gases.
The report summarizes the work
of 16 research groups that work with 23 computer models that deal
with different aspects of climate change. All 23 models agree that
the Earth will continue to warm as the levels of carbon dioxide and
other greenhouse gases increases in the atmosphere.
The report also summarizes what
our children can expect from climate change:
-
Sea levels rise as the
glaciers melt and colder water expands as it warms.
-
Extreme weather from heat
waves, droughts, and storms intensifies.
-
The changes will last for
centuries because CO2 remains in the atmosphere a very long
time.
For details about the
interviews, read the article in the January 20 edition of the Rocky
Mountain News written by Jim Erickson and titled, "Humans, Warming
Tied."
