Delta-Montrose Becomes First Coop to Endorse 25 x ‘25
October 23, 2006
In early October, the Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA)
became the first electric cooperative in the United States to
endorse the 25 x ’25 Initiative. The initiative has set a goal for
the United States to obtain 25 percent of its energy from renewable
energy resources by 2025. It is sponsored by the Energy Future
Coalition, whose goal is to create jobs in rural America. See:

DMEA General Manager Dan McClendon made the
announcement at the Plug Into Colorado Sun and Wind Conference
October 5 in Montrose. McClendon said, “We’re proud to take a
leadership role in this movement that will improve our nation’s
economy, environment, and national security.”
Also present at the conference was Mike Bowman, who
is a member of the 25 x ’25 Steering Committee. Bowman noted that as
of October 2006, more than 300 organizations have signed on to the
initiative, half of which are rural and agricultural organizations.
Of course, one of the organizations supporting the initiative is the
Colorado Renewable Energy Society.
Altogether, 28 U.S. Senators have signed on,
including Ken Salazar and Wayne Allard. A majority of Colorado’s
Congressional representatives have also signed on, including Bob
Beauprez, Marilyn Musgrave, John Salazar, and Mark Udall. For
details about the DMEA announcement, see the coop’s November 2006
newsletter at:

The following week, California Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger made a big announcement of his support for 25 x ’25
in New York City. The Terminator thus becomes the 19th governor to
endorse the initiative. Read that story on the U.S. Department of
Energy (DOE) website at:
