NREL, Universities Hail Renewable Energy
Collaboratory
July 8, 2006
In an unusual move for large institutions that
habitually shy away from politics, the National Renewable Energy
Laboratory (NREL) joined Colorado's leading universities in
welcoming the signature of Governor Bill Owens on House Bill (HB)
1322. NREL joined the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado
State University in Fort Collins, and the University of Colorado
(CU) in Boulder in applauding the governor and the Colorado
Legislature for creating the Colorado Renewable Energy Research
Collaboratory.
The Collaboratory will receive up to $2 million per
year for three years that can be used to apply for matching research
grants from federal and private sources. The Collaboratory will
reimburse state investment through patent fees and sales of new
technology to the private sector. The idea for the collaborative was
put forward in January at the Renewable Energy Summit hosted by U.S.
Senator Ken Salazar.
CU President Hank Brown said, "Mobilizing our expertise
in renewable energy along with the resources at the National
Renewable Energy Laboratory will not only foster pioneering
research, but will place Colorado on the map as a vital leader in
renewable energy research." Brown credited Governor Owens, U.S.
Senator Ken Salazar, Colorado Senator Abel Tapia, and Colorado
Representative Bernie Buescher with putting together the coalition
that passed HB-1322. For details about the new research
collaborative, see the NREL June 8 press release.
