Colorado Green Pricing Programs in Nation’s Top Ten

May 9, 2005

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) reported in April that two Colorado utilities have renewable energy programs that rank among the top ten in the country. Green pricing are premium programs run by electric utilities that sell renewable energy for an extra charge.

Holy Cross Energy in Glenwood Springs has the fourth highest participation rate by its customers among all U.S. utilities. More than 5% of Holy Cross customers have signed up for the utility’s two programs called Wind Power Pioneers and Local Renewable Energy Pool. DOE’s Green Power Network publishes the full top-ten list. http://www.eere.energy.gov/greenpower/markets/pricing.shtml?page=3

Xcel Energy’s WindSource has the most participants of any utility green pricing program in the country at 40,990. Furthermore, WindSource was fifth in the country for utilities with total green-pricing sales with 138 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) in sales in 2004. These data reflect values at the end of 2004, and you can read the entire report on DOE’s Green Power Network (PDF 316 KB).
