Community Energy to Sell Renewable Energy Credits

September 19, 2005

Community Energy, Inc. in Boulder has announced it will offer renewable energy credits for sale to Colorado residents and businesses.  The credits, also known as “green tags,” will help fund new wind turbines at rural schools in Colorado.  Community Energy’s first project is a 7.5-megawatt (MW) wind project located near Lamar and Springfield, Colorado.  The project consists of five GE wind turbines each rated at 1.5 MW that are operated by the Arkansas River Power Authority and the Lamar Utilities Board.

The offering is an alternative to Xcel Energy's WindSource and other utility green pricing programs. Community Energy’s certificates cost for Colorado wind energy cost $2.00 per 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) for residential customers, $1.20 per 100 kWh for commercial customers.

The University of Colorado at Boulder has purchased 8.8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, and the City of Boulder and NREL have already purchased renewable energy certificates from Community Energy.  For more information, see: http://www.newwindenergy.org
