Solar Powers America

The Colorado Renewable Energy Society (CRES) is the lead organization in Colorado of partnerships for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) new initiative: Solar Powers America. The goal of the former initiative, Million Solar Roofs, was to install solar energy systems on at least one million roofs in the United States by 2010. That initiative has achieved its goals and the Solar Powers America Initiative wants to continue the momentum established by our partnerships.

Solar Powers America is organized as a partnership between DOE and private organizations that can move together toward this goal and educate the public about the benefits of solar energy. DOE provides grants to some organizations involved in the partnerships based on their experience with solar education in their respective communities. DOE also holds regular meetings with partners to monitor the progress and coordinate the efforts of these groups.

CRES has received three SPA (formerly Million Solar Roofs) grants from DOE since 2002, and works closely with the Colorado Energy Science Center (CESC) in Golden on this initiative. CRES chapters in Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, and Durango are also involved. Solar Powers America current partnerships include:

Solar Panels on a Roof

This rooftop solar system in Denver was recently featured on the Colorado Tour of Solar Homes. Notice how modern solar panels like these have a low profile and blend in with the overall architecture of the home.
